How long should a prayer request be?

Ian Hsu Mar 23, 2026

Have you ever wondered how much information your prayer partners can absorb? It’s one of the most frequent questions we hear from mission workers.

What we know about length and engagement

Prayvine has analyzed how much content helps prayer partners the most. The pattern is consistent: when a prayer request goes beyond 300 words, measured engagement drops significantly. In fact, response typically decreases by 30-50% once a prayer request exceeds 300 words. When a prayer request runs over 450 words, response is 40-70% lower.

Based on the data, the sweet spot is between 75-150 words. This length provides good focus and readability, as well as enough context for partners to pray with understanding.

A new feature to help you serve your prayer partners

We have introduced a new feature in Prayvine to help you connect well with your prayer partners. As you write, a word count, estimated reading time, and gentle tip are displayed. When the word count approaches key thresholds, Prayvine will offer practical advice.

This feature won’t cut you off or stop you from writing longer messages. There are times when a more detailed prayer request is needed. Our goal is to help you reach your partners in ways that result in prayer and fruitfulness, and that are aligned with the freedom you have in Christ to communicate as the Holy Spirit leads.

Important perspective about statistics and “success”

I want to emphasize that while engagement statistics provide helpful information about attention spans, they do not equate to spiritual success. Some of your most faithful partners will read your request, put down their phones, and pray quietly without clicking any buttons. Jesus celebrated this kind of hidden prayer (Matthew 6:6), which is something that technology cannot measure.

We value your feedback and want to hear from you
